Clean
Keep your scalp clean and dry.
Gently cleanse 1–2 times weekly with a sulfate-free shampoo or diluted shampoo applicator bottle to reach the scalp under wigs/weaves. Rinse thoroughly and dry the scalp before re-installing units to prevent buildup, odors, and yeast overgrowth that can cause itching.
Moisturize
Moisturize and protect the scalp and natural hair.
Use a light, non-comedogenic scalp oil or serum (e.g., jojoba, squalane, or a water-based scalp tonic) 2–3 times a week. Avoid heavy greases that clog follicles. For natural hair under wigs/units, apply a leave-in conditioner and seal lightly before braiding.
Mind tension
Mind tension and airflow.
Choose low-tension install methods; avoid tight braids, heavy extensions, or glued frontals that pull at edges. Rotate partings and ponytail positions. Use wig caps made of breathable mesh or silk; take “wig breaks” daily (evenings) so the scalp can air out.
Good Hygiene
Practice hygienic install and maintenance.
Disinfect combs, needles, and clips before use. Replace adhesive and clean lace regularly; remove glue residue from skin with appropriate removers, not harsh scrubbing. Wash synthetic and human-hair units per maker guidance; product buildup on the unit transfers to your scalp and itches.
Soothe
Soothe irritation early and prevent flare-ups.
If you’re prone to dandruff or itch, pre-treat the scalp once weekly with an anti-dandruff shampoo (zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide) and follow with a gentle conditioner on the hair only. For sensitive skin, patch-test adhesives and use scalp barrier sprays. Persistent redness, bumps, or hair shedding around edges warrants a break from installs and a check-in with a dermatologist.
Quick tips:
- Sleep with hair off the neck and in a loose pattern; use a silk/satin pillowcase or bonnet.
- Keep tools and caps dry; replace sweaty wig caps frequently, especially after workouts.
- Choose lightweight styles in hot weather; heat and sweat amplify itch.
